That is what I was lacking
When I first dove into music production seriously, moving beyond platforms like SoundCloud, I felt a bit of pressure to have top-notch gear. I worried that people might not take me seriously without a professional setup. Even though I couldn’t afford the latest equipment back then, I pushed myself to build a more professional studio over time.
I actually started my first album, “Hints of Destiny,” primarily on an iPad, and it was a really special time because of the simplicity and the creativity it allowed. Eventually, I upgraded to a Mac to finish the album, but those early days on the iPad really hold a special place in my heart.
I did notice that I sometimes got odd looks from others who were more used to industry-standard gear, but I wish I had been more confident in my approach. Over time, I realized that the quality of the music I produced was on par, whether I was using the iPad or now with my Ableton setup.
That said, I do miss the freedom and simplicity of those iPad days. Whenever I feel overwhelmed now, I find myself reaching for my phone to create music, and I remember those simpler times. It’s amazing to see others confidently creating with minimal setups, and it definitely inspires me.
Now that the situation is completely different, as someone who has professional gear myself, I look at producers today who make music on tablets or phones. It doesn’t make me give weird looks like I used to get from more experienced producers back in the day. Instead, I have a lot of respect for their raw creativity and ingenuity. They find ways to make up for any gear limitations with their unique vision and talent. It’s a good reminder that at the core of music production is creativity, not just the equipment.
So, the message to you all is that I wish I had the confidence back in the day like the people I see these days who produce on phones and iPads. They give off a raw, passionate, unapologetic vibe that inspires me and that I was lacking myself. Whatever you do, never be ashamed of what you work with. Never be afraid to start simple.
